Citizens' Trails Advisory Committee, Inc.

Annual Report 2001-2002

In its first year as a formal organization the Citizens' Trails Advisory Committee has built upon its strengths -- community support and the involvement of an array of interested, talented, and dedicated volunteers.  The list of accomplishments below reflects the work of a number of people, each contributing not only time, energy, money, or expertise, but also dedication and commitment to the township.  We think it is a solid base, continuing the tasks we have traditionally done, but expanding into new areas now open to us as an official non-profit.   

Organization:

• Incorporate as a non-profit
• Set up bank account
• Adopt bylaws
• Build initial membership
• Standardize meeting place and time

Brochures Created:

• What is Abington Trails?
• Existing Trails in Abington
• Edgehill Woods (for possible trail)
• Abington Trails Relay Race and Family Cycle Day
• Take a Hike: Trails in and around Abington (under development)

Events:

• 2nd Annual Abington Trails Relay Race (incorporating Family Cycle Day)

Grants:

• DCED (pending)
• American Hiking Society (pending)
• Robert Woods Johnson (jointly with the Center for Sustainable Communities, Temple University; pending)

Trail Development:

Seven potential trails were researched and studied in depth.  Of the seven:

• 1 was formally proposed to the township board and defeated
• 3 are deferred for the present
• 1 is being studied further and may be formally proposed later this year
• 1 is under development / planning by a commissioner and a neighborhood group
• 1 is undergoing further study

Outreach, Partnerships, and Public Relations:

• Appearance on Comcast newsmakers
• Poster in Abington Township Public Library
• Meeting with subcommittee of township's Economic Development Committee
• Meeting with selected Temple researchers
• Meeting with township's school administration
• Contact with Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission
• Contact with Greenworks
• Contact with Walkable Places, Inc.
• Enhance web site and purchase domain name
